Clay Casting Project

A Gift Idea for the Quilter in Your Life!

Create a charming gift box and fill it
with delicious shortbread cookies to match!

Materials Needed:

1 Rycraft cookie stamp or craft stamp
#278 – Quilt Block
Clay - we recommend Creative Paperclay® which is non-toxic and air dries to a paintable pure white
1 clay casting* #278 – Quilt Block (see Basic Clay Casting Instructions).
Crimper cookie cutter or biscuit cookie cutter
Sandpaper or emery board
Acrylic primer
Acrylic paints: green, gold, red
Glitter for Seashell decoration
Clear acrylic varnish (optional)
Rub ‘n Buff ®, foam brush or SpouncerTM by PLAID ®, soft cloth (optional)
Stiffened doily
Bow to match green paint

Plastic snowflake (from craft store)
Hot glue

*Note:  Alternately, the casting for this project may be made from paper instead of clay (see Basic Paper Casting Instructions). The choice is yours.


1.  While clay is wet, cut out casting with cookie cutter and let dry.
2.   Sand rough edges smooth.
3.  Apply a coat of primer and let dry.
4.  Apply green, red and gold paint to design, as shown in photograph. Let dry.
5.  Optional: Apply Rub ‘n Buff® to the design edges, and sides as shown. Let dry.
6.  Use hot glue to attach casting to snowflake, then glue to the package.
7.  Glue on bow.
